History

Galerie Jan De Maere started in 1973 in Eeklo as a gallery dealing in 20th century Art. Two years later the gallery was moved to Damme in a 15th century listed building on the market place "The Grote Ster" and in 1978 to Brussels, where the gallery is still active.

In 1980 the emphasis shifted from 20th century art, including classical painters as Modigliani, Soutine, Picasso, Duffy, Pissaro etc. to Old Master Paintings, drawings and sculptures. Since 1987, we specialized only in Old Masters.

Since 1992, the gallery is located in the SABLON area and contains predominantly Flemish paintings, drawings and sculptures from the late 15th to the early 19th century. It is housed in the same building as the Documentationcentre for the Flemish Art Patrimonium, who is run by expert staff disposing of extensive and unique resources of documentation. We undertake evaluations, expertise and offer an advisory service to clients who wish to explore purchases at auctions and on the art-market
